ROHRBAUGH MAKES IT
THREE IN ROW Hanover,
PA (6/13/08) – The right rear tire was deflating and
two-time defending Trail-Way 358 sprint champion
Jeff Rohrbaugh was surrounded by cars just as fast
as his Roy Vincent Racing No. 7V.
However, by the end of
Friday’s 25-lap feature, the York resident was
standing in victory lane for the third consecutive
Friday night at Trail-Way.
“Hey, we got it done. We’ve
caught a lot of good breaks and that’s the way our
deal’s been here,” Rohrbaugh said. “We have good
breaks and bad breaks. When we have the good breaks,
we end up here.”
Rohrbaugh started 11th and
it took almost the entire race to find his way to
the front because of the strength of outside
polesitter Colt White. The Greencastle driver took
the lead at the green flag and, following an early
caution for the stopped car of Mike Duncan, paced
the field through 16 green-flag laps, after which
Rohrbaugh had driven to fifth place.
And then the caution flags
began.
Dale Hammaker’s car stopped
with a flat right front tire in the fourth turn and,
after three laps for the tire change, White resumed
command. After two laps, Peter Bartley’s car spun in
the second corner and White again kept control, this
time with Hanover’s Tim Wagaman on his tail.
Meanwhile, Rohrbaugh had passed Nicole Bower and
Austin Reed to claim third spot.
“Brad (McClelland) pulled
up alongside of me and let me know the right rear
was soft,” Rohrbaugh said. “I thought, ‘We’ll sail
her in there and if it rolls over, we’ll just end up
on the hook.”
Instead, the race went
another lap when Wagaman’s car suddenly slowed with
a puff of smoke and stopped in the second turn.
Rohrbaugh used his nephew’s misfortune to power past
White to the inside of the second turn on the
restart and he drove away to his 14th career 358
sprint triumph at Trail-Way.
For his win, Rohrbaugh not
only claimed the victory, but also a pewter plate
presented by the York County Racing Club, which also
presented $25 which Rohrbaugh returned to the club’s
injured drivers fund. Rohrbaugh also won the D&S
Diversified Services Hard Charger Award.
White continued to a strong
runner-up finish and was followed by McClelland, who
rallied following a nasty flip against the first
turn wall last Friday night which severely mangled
his car. Reed was fourth ahead of Joe Trone Jr.,
Steve Owings, Billy Dietrich, Randy Davis, Nicole
Bower and Randy Whisler.
Davis and Bower won heats
for the 358 sprints.
